Donald "Don" Hoyt Voyles

Born at Crawford Long Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, Don was a classic in every sense of the word. Always a gregarious man, he was recognized as Most Popular by his senior class at Jonesboro High School, where he also lettered in all four major sports. He graduated from Georgia State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and was poised to begin his business career when his fraternity big brother was killed in Vietnam. Don volunteered to go and continue the fight. He served five years in the United States Air Force. As a first lieutenant, he served one year as a Forward Air Control pilot providing close tactical air support for Military Assistance Command Two, the Second Division Army Republic of Vietnam, and the Fifth United States Special Forces Operations. Then as a lieutenant, Don logged over 500 solo combat hours in the Cessna aircraft designated as the O2A Oscar Deuce. He was twice awarded the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and once the Vietnamese Staff Medal by the Vietnamese Military. In addition, he was awarded 13 United States Air Force medals representing 11 combat sorties. After his return home, he received the USAF Distinguised Flying Cross for a mission flown in support of the Second ARVN Division. He was also awarded the Able Auernaut Award by the Pacific Air Command for successfully landing his disabled aircraft gear up at Da Nang Air Field with minimum damage to the belly of the plane allowing its return to service with only 25 hours of maintenance required. After his military service, he followed his business profession into the automobile industry. He moved to Cartersville, Georgia, in 1985, with Don Voyles Dodge dealership. With his devotion to customer service, he received many statewide awards for excellent customer relations. In semi- retirement, he established a consulting business, with service departments over the Southeast as clients. He was community oriented and was a member of many local, statewide, and national civic organizations.He, and his wife Jackie, traveled the world and shared many unique adventures through the years. Left to celebrate his life are his wife, Jacquelyn (Jackie) A. Voyles; three daughters by birth, Jennifer, Lara, and Katharine; two daughters by marriage, Lisanne and Joanne; two sisters, Martha Jo and Beth, and a host of additional family and friends. He joins in memory his father, Hoyt Gibson Voyles, his mother Katharine Camp Voyles, and his brother Steve Voyles. Don will be well remembered by all whose lives he enriched with his ready smile, quick wit, and generous spirit. A Celebration of Life service will be held on the Green at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Cartersville on Sunday, February 21, at 2:00 pm. Due to COVID restrictions, masks are required. Interment will be private at Georgia National Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, the American Cancer Society, or the Parkinson's Foundation.
