Emma Jean Tickle Sleeman, of Birmingham, Alabama departed this life on January 19, 2024, in Kennesaw, Georgia.
Emma Jean was born in Birmingham on May 5, 1931. She is preceded in death by her parents, Evelyn Harmon Tickle, Homer McCoullough Tickle, her brother Homer “Doonie” McCoullough Tickle Jr. her sister, Betty Jemison Main, her husband Robert Edward Sleeman and her son, Charles “Chuck” Preston Sleeman.
She is survived by her sons, Robert “Ted” Edward Sleeman, Jr and John Frederick Sleeman and her grandchildren, Emily Sleeman Flemming (Josh), Jackson Frederick Sleeman and Anna Frances Sleeman and her niece, Patty Main Thurston (Marland). She also had several grand-nieces and family and friends who will miss her dearly.
Emma Jean graduated from Ramsay High School and Stratford College, Danville Virginia. She also attended Auburn University where she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority.
Emma Jean was a very active member of Vestavia Hills Baptist Church, Birmingham, for over 20 years. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels, and WeCare and was a member of the Shalom Sunday School class for many years. She also worked at Vestavia Methodist preschool for over 20 years.
Emma Jean, or Nana, as she was affectionately called, was a loving, caring person. She enjoyed traveling and entertaining visitors in her home. Her friends and family have precious memories of her beautiful backyard, her gardening, and her love of ice cream.
A memorial service for the family will be held at a later date.
