It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Edward James Riley, who left us on August 17, 2024. Ed was born on January 13, 1948, in Buffalo, NY. The beloved son of James and Joan Riley, Ed grew up in Hamburg, NY alongside his sister Maureen. He enjoyed a close-knit family environment that instilled in him the values of community, hard work, loyalty, and kindness, as well as a deep-seated love of the Buffalo Bills.
Ed devoted his professional life to the protection of others. He served honorably in the United States Navy for eight years, including time aboard the USS Tullibee. In the Navy, Ed served as a Nuclear Power Operator Trainee. He continued this path as a civilian, expanding his work in nuclear operations. Ed held many titles at various nuclear plants throughout his career, retiring as a Manager of Nuclear Operations Procedures at James A. FitzPatrick in Oswego, NY.
Outside of his career, Ed took great pleasure in golfing, reading history, crafting models of Navy ships and submarines, and traveling. Most of all, he cherished the time he spent with his beautiful wife Barbara. His favorite time of year was Christmas, as it brought together his family and friends. He loved the spirit of the season, from the sparkle of the decorations to the time-honored traditions and the delicious food he prepared for his loved ones.
Ed was a devoted husband, brother, father, and grandfather. He shared a special bond with his sister Maureen and brother-in-law Ray, who provided him with unwavering support, humor, and companionship throughout his life. Ed was also a beloved uncle to Ray Jr., Madonna, Michael, Matthew, and Jonathan. Ed is survived by his wife of 28 years, Barbara Allen-Riley, sister Maureen (Ray), sons Sean (Laura) and Mike (Kelly), and daughters Rebecca and Patricia. Perhaps most importantly, his spirit endures in his seven grandchildren: Michael, Anthony, Haylie, Emma, Jack, Kate, and Declan.
We will miss Ed every day, but we take comfort in the thought that we will meet again. Until then, we will carry him in our hearts forever. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to prostate cancer research in Ed’s memory at https://pcri.org/donate
