Frank "Francis John" Karkula, 88, of Chicago, IL, passed away on April 2, 2024, in Atlanta, GA. He was born on October 10, 1935, in Chicago, IL.
Frank, as he was known to his loved ones, proudly served in the U.S. Air Force as a flight simulation instructor. After his military service, he pursued a successful career as the owner of The Den, a renowned Restaurant & Bar, before retiring in 1995.
Frank grew up in the Back of the Yards in Chicago where he was a lifeguard, played basketball with the Blue Jays at Davis Square Park and in high school at St. Joseph where he met the Love of his Life, Dolores.
Frank found great happiness through his Family. Whether it was attending school or sporting events for his children and grandchildren or imparting life lessons, Frank, along with his wife Dolores, were loving and dedicated parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.
Frank enjoyed bowling, golf, horse racing, and traveling with his family. He also enjoyed playing card games with his family that would be filled with joy, and laughter which stoked his competitive spirit.
Frank is survived by his beloved wife of over 69 years, Dolores, children Frank, Janice, and Michael (Krista), sister Charlotte (late Bill) Slawson, grandchildren Thomas, Bradley (Anna), and Olivia, great-grandchild Ella, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother Anna, sisters Rose (Hank) Stec and Albina (Donny) LaPorte, and brother Henry (Joan) Karkula.
A man of honor and dedication to his family, Frank is loved and will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.
