Gary Elwin Cody, known affectionately as Gary by all who knew him, passed away on March 7, 2024, at the age of 80. Born on February 8, 1944, in Aragon, Georgia, Gary lived a full and vibrant life before departing peacefully in Rockmart, Georgia, due to complications from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
Gary is remembered as a beacon of joy and laughter, a man whose presence was synonymous with warmth and kindness. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Marie Cody, and a loving brother to Barbara Godbee and her spouse Robert, Diane Duggan, and Sue Richardson and her spouse Joe. His legacy continues through his children Doug Cody and his spouse Tammy, David Cody and his spouse April, Darlene Talley and her spouse Dusty, and Christy Cody, as well as his children-in-love, Tommy McDuffie and his spouse Maribeth, Deborah Gervais and her spouse Mike, Teresa Robinson, and Bobby McDuffie.
Gary's joy was multiplied by the love of his grandchildren, Jennifer Dukes, Aaron and Megan Cody, Christen and Chrisian Almond, Daniel Cody, Brandon Brisbane, Kayla and Ben Bonner, and Kary and Vince Lane. The delight he found in his family extended to his grandkids-in-love, Jessica and Joshua, Matthew, Mark and Brittany, Michael, Jacob, and Taylor. His great-grandchildren, Bradley, Ryan, and Lexe, Kadin, Kendra, Karmin, Lorkin and Noah, Jade and Cayden, Jamin, Bladen and Callen, Tannen and Kendalyn, and great-grandkids-in-love, Elijah and Ethan, Grayson, Ayla and Declan, Abigail, Natalie, Remi, Kobe, and Jordan, and Braiden, also held a special place in his heart.
Throughout his life, Gary was known for his skilled hands and problem-solving abilities. His career as a mechanic not only showcased his expertise but also his dedication to helping others. He was a respected member of his professional community, where his work ethic and collaborative spirit were deeply appreciated.
Gary's interests were a reflection of his love for life and family. He was a man of faith, actively involved in his church Praise Tabernacle, and found peace and fulfillment in working in his garage, tending to his yard, and most importantly, playing with his grandkids. His laughter was infectious, and his kind, loving nature made him a cherished friend and neighbor.
Described by those who knew him as funny, loving, and kind, Gary's approach to life can be summed up by the well-known quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson, "To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children... to leave the world a bit better... to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Gary succeeded in every sense of the word, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Gary's passing is a great loss to his family and community, but his spirit and the memories he created will continue to inspire and guide those he left behind. As we say goodbye to Gary Elwin Cody, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey marked by laughter, love, and an abundance of kindness. His story does not end here, for in the hearts and minds of his family and friends, Gary's legacy will live on forever.
