Gene Petro, an adored husband, father and grandfather passed away on April 11th in the comfort of his home surrounded by family. Gene was born on May 13th, 1945 in Thomaston, GA but raised in Queens, New York.
Gene had experienced so many things in his life and was a true salesman. In his teens, Gene was a backup singer to Randy and The Rainbows singing their hit song "Denise, Denise". While traveling the country as a road salesman for a woman's blouse line Gene and his wife met in Columbus, GA. It's hard to believe two transplants from New York would meet in Columbus, GA and fall deeply in love. Once settled Gene was the weatherman for WLTZ, TV and sales for WCGQ radio in Columbus. Oh the joy he had producing TV and radio commercials using friends and family in their productions. Gene starred in numerous plays at the Springer Opera House. He loved his fishing and could tell you tales about our boating in the Gulf. Later Gene took up making "bonsai trees", some 30 years old. And yes, he did get into the obligatory building of birdhouses and dioramas ,,,,what an artist! It must be his Italian blood.
His most cherished talent was the glue to his family. Gene is preceded in death by his father, Gene Petro Sr., Mother, Patricia Cooper Petro and Sister, Valerie Petro Marley. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Kathleen Shepherd Petro, Daughter, Kimberly Petro, daughter, Dana Petro, son, Mark Petro, son, Nicholas Petro and brother Christoper Petro. Survivors also include 5 grandchildren, Lucia Provenzano, Rylan and Arrielle Petro and Sophia and Mila Petro. In-laws include Kate Petro and Patrick Wade, Spencer and Debbie Shepherd, John Shepherd, Dr. Aldo and Eloise Khoury, Bob and Michelle Shepherd, Jean Petro and Renata. Patrick, so many Aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews, foreign exchange students, and Coco too.
A celebration of life will be held in New Jersey during the summer.
Thank you to all the caregivers, nurses, family and friends for the love, support and prayers. Gene was truly blessed.
