George Joseph Anderson, 89, of Stockbridge, GA, passed away on May 9th, 2023, while under hospice care. He was born on July 20th, 1933, to Anne and Joseph Anderson of Medford, Massachusetts (who both preceded him in death). He graduated from Tufts University with a degree in Chemistry. He earned his doctorate and post doctorate in Chemistry at Purdue University. He met his wife, Sandra, in Keene, New Hampshire before they moved to East Longmeadow, MA where George worked for Monsanto. There, he helped develop heat resistant tiles used by NASA on the space shuttle. They moved to Georgia in 1986, and George continued his work in Chemistry/Research and Development with Georgia Pacific for several years before retiring to his home in Stockbridge with his wife and animals. During his work career he was considered one of the preeminent polymer Chemists in the world.
He was known for his brilliant mind and sharp-witted humor. He once taught himself German in college instead of attending class, still showing up and acing the final exam (as he did with all his courses). He was also known for getting into a little trouble in school by conducting his own experiments with university lab equipment!
George had many interests including jazz music, playing bridge, golfing, and watching his favorite sports teams: The Boston Bruins and New England Patriots. He had a strong love for animals; particularly his beloved donkeys and goats, and he even tolerated Sandra’s cats despite not exactly being a fan. Most of all, he cherished his dogs, owning many over his lifetime, but his favorite and last was his ‘best-dog’, Barney.
His wife, Sandra, preceded him in death. George is survived by his daughter Sherron Nye and sons Mark Vincent Umland and his wife, Tina Umland; and Kenneth Anderson. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Cassie Hagerich and her husband, Keith Hagerich; Michael Stawiarz, Mark Richard Umland, and his wife Kaylee Umland; his great-grandchildren: Iris Stawiarz, Parker Stawiarz and Aaron Hagerich; and by his dog, Barney. George will be greatly missed by all. There will be a private service for family. In leiu of flowers please send a donation to: https://www.swchristiancare.org/
