George Richard Wright

July 8, 1965 — December 13, 2020

George “Richard” Wright, 55, of Waleska, Georgia passed away on December 13, 2020, at Northside Hospital in Canton, Georgia. An open house will be held Friday, December 18th at 126 Osage Court, Waleska, GA 30183 from 2:00-4:00 pm. On Saturday, December 19th at 2:00 pm, there will be a casual service to spread Richard’s ashes, share some stories, and plant a commemorative tree on his land. For both events, we will politely enforce CDC guidelines for community events and ask that you pay your respects privately if you have been sick or you have been in contact with someone who has been sick or has a fever. We kindly ask that you bring your own mask. Even though Saturday’s event will be outdoors, we will still follow the CDC recommendations for social gatherings. Parking is available at Little Refuge Baptist Church at 1644 Little Refuge Road, Waleska, GA 30183. We have also arranged parking at 1270 Little Refuge Road, a private residence, as another option. In keeping with Richard’s nature, this event involves a 0.3-mile walk down the road and another small hike through his property. This will be a very casual affair and we ask that you don’t wear anything you wouldn’t want to get dirty (think hiking boots, not heels). Richard was born in Decatur, Georgia to Robert Burns Wright, Sr., and Martha Ann Hopson (nee Wheeler) on July 8, 1965. He graduated from North Cobb High School and continued his traditional and non-traditional education throughout his life. A graduate of Reinhardt University with a degree in liberal arts, Richard was a skilled carpenter, a published historian, a prolific storyteller, and an adventurous and loving dad to his daughter, Cassie. Richard was always most comfortable in the rugged outdoors, preferring his coffee brewed on an open flame in the absence of creature comforts. As a revered local historian, Richard loved to hear firsthand tales and research original documents of historical significance. He had a passion for sharing newly discovered facts with friends, historical societies, and strangers alike. Richard is preceded in death by his father Robert Burns Wright, Sr. Richard is survived by his daughter Cassandra “Cassie” Wright, brothers Robert Wright Jr. and William Alan Wright, and mother Martha Ann Hopson. In lieu of flowers, we believe Richard would appreciate donations to: The Georgia Mountain Bike Association. https://northgeorgiamountainbikeassociation.org/donate
