John E. Diehl, age 82, of Marietta, Georgia, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 14, 2023. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; four children, June (Michael), Susan (Tom), John (Kris) and Erin (Travis); nine grandchildren (Lauren, Kevin, Jamie, Kelly, Emily, Benjamin, Jakob, Rebecca and Lucy) and one great granddaughter, Ellie. He is also survived by two brothers (Gerald and Eugene), as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was born in 1940 in New York City, New York, and was the son of the late John and Julia Diehl. He grew up in New York City and moved to Long Island where he and his wife, Carol, raised their family. After years of working as a model maker, he retired and moved to Pennsylvania and ultimately to Georgia. They recently celebrated a wonderful milestone - their 62nd anniversary.
Although it wasn't always easy, he had the most remarkable and full life. His faith and his family were what mattered to him most. John was always there for his family. He made everyone feel special and important, including the children he and his wife fostered over the years. His family will have countless cherished memories of their time with him, especially his great sense of humor. In addition to family time, he enjoyed his activities and interests. Among them were coaching, painting, participating in church activities, traveling, gardening, going to garage sales and flea markets and collecting records.
He had experienced many health issues over the years. Through the ups and downs, he managed his illnesses with strength and grace, and now, this wonderful man is at peace. “Do unto others as you would have them do to you.” This was found in his Bible on a note in his handwriting. This was how he chose to live, and his family and friends were blessed to have him in their life. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
There will be a memorial service on February 23 11:00 am at Maple Avenue United Methodist Church, 63 Maple Avenue NW, Marietta, GA 30064. In the near future, the family will honor John with a celebration of his life in New York.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in John’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
