John E. Sawhill III passed away quietly on the evening of 10 April. Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1947, he was a son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. He was born a twin; there was a connection between John and his brother, Jim, until his last breath. John spent his early years in Wellesley MA where he focused on tennis, fast cars, and dating. He graduated from Marlboro College in Vermont and the University of Miami Law School. While John lived in Georgia for the majority of his life, he remained an avid New England sports fan. Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, and Celtics were dear to his soul & it could be said he knew those teams almost as well as his mother did. John loved the law. At his best, his personality and concern for others were larger than life, and when in the courtroom, he was no better friend and no worse enemy. Ultimately, he taught those closest to him to use compassion and the need to fight for those who could not fight for themselves. Our brother, father, and grandfather, John was at war with his own personal demons. At his worst, he battled with drug addiction and depression, and over the last 30 years, he was a hard man to love as those demons changed him and affected all around him. His family and friends will miss the man he was and all he accomplished and loved. John was preceded in death by his parents, John E. Sawhill Jr and Bettina Townsend Sawhill, and leaves behind a brother, two sisters, two children, and six grandchildren. There will be a quiet memorial service at a time and location to be determined. Should anyone feel compelled to make a gesture in his honor, please donate to the Hospice organization.
