When he understood it, he called for his Friends, and told them, I am going to my Father’s. -- John Bunyan, Pilgrim’s Progress Joseph M. High, 97, died on June 2, 2022 after a short illness. A native of Yancey County, NC, he was a long-time resident of Jefferson City, TN and had recently relocated to Atlanta, GA. Joe Mack enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 and served with the Fourth Marine Division in the South Pacific, including on Iwo Jima. He returned to study at Carson-Newman College and graduated in 1949. He returned to Carson-Newman again in 1958 and taught accounting there until 1982. He was a patient gardener and a disciplined beekeeper. He published his first novel, The Centurion: A Tale of the Crucifixion, at the age of 93. He credited 80 years of Sunday School attendance for the breadth and accuracy of the historical research. He was preceded in death by his parents, J.M. and Addie High, and by his wife of 70 years, Lynette. He is survived by his son, Thomas, of Atlanta, GA and by his daughter, Linda, of Jefferson City, TN, two grandchildren, Mary Margaret (Edouard) von Herberstein of Paget, Bermuda and William (Hannah Legerton) High of Asheville, NC, and by five great-grandchildren.
