Joseph Y. Gentry, 71, formerly of Acworth and Marietta, passed away peacefully Jan. 20
in hospice in Sandy Springs.
He was born Feb. 24, 1951 to Wilma Young Gentry and Elmer Gentry. Joe was a 1970
graduate of Sprayberry High School in Marietta. He attended Kennesaw State University
before becoming a professional photographer. As a news photographer, he won multiple
awards for the Georgia-based Gwinnett Daily News and the California-based Orange
County Register. During his time in California, he studied at the University of California,
Irvine. In later life, he worked for two early digital companies in Dallas, Tx., before
retiring.
Joe loved family and said that being a father to his son, Will, was the highlight of his life.
His hobbies included photography, cars, skiing and music.
Joe is survived by his son, William, of Ankeny, LA.; a sister, Joan Rains of Calhoun; and
by nephew Brad (Cherri) Rains of Calhoun; and niece Bridgette (Rick) Pulver of Marietta.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jimmy Gentry.
Services will be Wednesday, 1/25, at 3 p.m., at Emory Presbyterian Church, 1886 N.
Decatur Rd., Atlanta, Ga. He will be interred in Texas, where he raised his son, at a later
date.
