Laura Rose Tamayo

February 8, 1970 — March 28, 2023

Dr. Laura Rose Mann Tamayo, age 53, passed away at her home in Acworth, Georgia on March 28, 2023. Laura was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1970. She is survived by her son, Ian Tamayo, and his wife Alyssa, of San Antonio, Texas and by her daughter, Jordan Tamayo of Acworth, Georgia. Other survivors include her former husband, Dr. Edwin Tamayo, of Austin, Texas, her parents, Paul and Rosalyn Mann, of Woodstock, Georgia, her brother, William Mann and his wife, Erin Wehr Mann, of Marietta, Georgia, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Laura graduated from Memorial High School in McAllen, Texas, in 1988. She was an accomplished bassoonist and was a three-time member of the Texas All-State Orchestra. Laura was also named to the prestigious McDonalds All America Band. In 1992 she graduated with honors in chemical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and worked briefly in that field before deciding to become a doctor. She was admitted to the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Medicine in San Antonio, graduating in 1999. After residency, she and a colleague, Dr. Wendy Gideon, founded Helotes Pediatrics near San Antonio. (Later this year, Helotes Pediatrics will celebrate its twentieth year of service.)

Unfortunately, in 2010, Dr. Tamayo suffered a head injury from a fall at her home. She continued to work full time for the next eight years but the injury eventually became disabling and forced her to retire and withdraw from the work she loved. She and child Jordan moved to Georgia in 2022 to be closer to family.

Laura loved raising her children, she loved her outspoken political activism, and her exchange trips to Japan with the Bexar County Medical Society. She will be missed by family and friends and by her former patients.
