Margaret Celestial Billingsley (Hefenbrock), a cherished mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2024, at the age of 101. Born on February 3, 1923, in Flatonia, Texas, Margaret was the youngest of four children born to Henry Paul Hefenbrock and Frieda Kloss, who were part of the German immigrant community that settled in Fayette County.
Margaret’s childhood was rooted in the simplicity and hard work of farm life. She walked two miles to school each day, where she enjoyed the company of her maternal grandmother nearby. On the farm, she contributed to the family’s livelihood, helping with chores and participating in the sale of eggs and cream. The farm provided much of their sustenance, with corn, eggs, beef, pork, chicken, and vegetables forming the basis of their meals.
Margaret graduated from high school and pursued business school in San Antonio, Texas. Her life took a new turn when she married Weyland Billingsley Sr., who was career Army. Their life together took them to various locations, including Tacoma, Washington; Anchorage, Alaska; and Izmir, Turkey, where they made lasting memories.
Margaret was renowned in her family and community for her exceptional cooking, quilting, and gardening skills. Her cookies, especially her beloved Mini Chocolate Cupcakes, were a highlight of every gathering. Her recipe for these treats, which brought joy to so many, is a testament to her love and dedication.
In her later years, Margaret lived independently, maintaining an impressive bowling average with a group of ladies with whom she bowled for decades. She continued this passion until the age of 93, demonstrating her enduring vitality and spirit.
Margaret was preceded in death by her siblings, Harry Harold Hefenbrock (1913-1999), Jimmie May Smith (Hefenbrock) (1917-2009), and Wesley Charles Hefenbrock (1921-1982). She is survived by her son, Weyland, grandson Michael (Kate) and great-grandchildren, Zion, Zemi and Oz, nieces Carol, Martha, Wanda, Marcia, Lauri, Jimmie, Gracie, nephew Darryl, loving family and countless friends who will remember her fondly for her warmth, kindness, and the joy she brought into their lives.
A memorial service celebrating Margaret’s remarkable life will be held in San Antonio at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The American Red Cross in her honor.
Margaret Celestial Billingsley will be deeply missed but remembered with love and admiration. Her legacy of kindness and strength will continue to inspire all who knew her.
