Martha Anne Newton passed away on May 1, 2020. Anne was born in Atlanta, GA on August 26, 1934, to George Leonard Newton and Gay Gauntt Newton. Following graduation from Murphy High School in Atlanta in 1952, she attended Tift College in Forsyth, GA obtaining a BA degree in Science in 1956. Anne attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary graduating in 1958 with a Master of Education degree. Following one year of teaching at Forest Park High School, she entered the School of Nursing at Georgia Baptist Hospital graduating in 1962. After working in several nursing specialties, Anne attended the DePaul Hospital School of Nurse Anesthesia in Norfolk, VA graduating and becoming a CRNA in 1968. Following graduation, she returned to the Atlanta area to work at Georgia Baptist Hospital and the VA Hospital in Decatur, GA. In 1978 Anne returned to Norfolk, VA to teach in the school of Nurse Anesthesia. In 1980 she became the Program Director. While the director, Anne was responsible for developing a curriculum that led the certificate program to a Master of Nursing program in affiliation with Old Dominion University. Anne became adjunct faculty at Old Dominion University in 1981 along with her duties as Director of Anesthesia and the Program Director of Nurse Anesthesia at DePaul Medical Center. She remained in that position until her retirement in 1997. The Anne Newton Award in Clinical Anesthesia is awarded each year to the graduate from the ODU Nurse Anesthesia Program who excels in clinical practice. Following retirement, she worked part-time as a CRNA until 2001 and continued as a consultant at ODU in the Anesthesia Program. In 2001 she returned to live in Adairsville, GA in order to be near her family whom she loved dearly. Anne was an active member of the Cartersville First Baptist Church and served in several different areas including Chairperson of the Senior Adult Ministry Team. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Billie Hogan. She is survived by her sister, Lynne Newton (Clyde), brother-in-law, Jimmy Hogan; nieces, Sandra Cash (Randy), Tricia Rhinehart (Jim), Lynnda Higgins (Mark), and Jennifer Kluttz; great-nieces and nephews, Tori, Rebekah, and Katherine Cash, Jamie and Elizabeth Rhinehart, Meghan, Erin, and Mark Higgins, Mackenzie and Jacob Kluttz.
