The third of six children, Nancy Jo was born March 13, 1941 in Newnan, Georgia to Joe and Pauline McKoy. Nan spent her childhood playing outside in Shannon, a small mill town near Rome, Georgia, before Nan's family relocated permanently into Rome proper. After graduating from Model High School, Nan attended Shorter College. The first in her family to attend college, she graduated with a Bachelor's in Early Childhood Education, a certification that allowed her to teach anyone from kindergarten through 8th grade. Her teaching career spanned 40 years starting in Gordon County and reaching as far as Taipei, Taiwan, before concluding here in Carroll County at Whitesburg Elementary School. An avid storyteller, Nan discovered that one of her favorite things about teaching was helping children relate to the material whether it was 8th grade science or 2nd grade literature. She enjoyed hearing from past students about their lives over the years. After retiring from the public school system, Nan spent her remaining years helping to homeschool and care for her grandchildren.
In March of 1970, Nan married Air Force Staff Sergeant Robert "Bob" Sydnor Fitts, IV in Basel, Switzerland. During the next 10 years, they would live in five different states, two different countries, and add three children to their family. After finally settling in the Carroll County area, Nan enjoyed gardening, raising chickens, and mastering the art of baking a good pound cake.
Nan passed away on May 26, 2023 at home with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her older sisters, Pat Pence and Jackie O'Dillon, and her husband of 25 years. She is survived by her siblings (Joe & Marsha McKoy, Jennifer Goss, and Gail & Jeff Howell), her children (Seth & Renee Fitts, Rob & Becki Fitts, and Carrie Fitts & Jesse Lowe), as well as 10 grandchildren. Per Nancy's request, there will be no memorial. We ask that in lieu of a memorial, you enjoy a good meal with your family and friends while listening to Elvis. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite educational cause like the Ferst Readers of Carroll County.
