Ross Linton Maynard passed away peacefully on March 30, 2025, in Kennesaw, Georgia, at the age of 93.
Born in Atlanta on November 30, 1931, Ross graduated from Marist High School and went on to serve in the United States Navy for 22 years. He retired in 1970 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer — a role that gave him a lifetime of memorable stories he loved to share.
Ross was married to Margaret Louise Maynard for 65 years until her passing in 2017. Together, they built a life of love, adventure, and hospitality. They raised three children: Rex (deceased), Ray, and Renae.
After retiring from the Navy, Ross pursued various careers, including work at Rich’s Department Store, Maynard’s Marine Mart, selling antiques, doing carpentry, and truck driving. No matter the job, he approached it with steady hands and a strong work ethic.
In the early 2000s, Ross and Louise moved to Washington, Georgia, where they restored a historic 1820 Greek Revival mansion and opened Maynard’s Manor Bed & Breakfast. They quickly became part of the community, hosting weddings, welcoming guests during the Masters, and opening their home each year for the town’s Christmas Pilgrimage Tours. The couple also held a Christmas open house in their home every year for 65 years — an event cherished by family, friends, and neighbors and a wonderful reflection of their generous spirit.
Ross had a lifelong love for flying and a passion for collecting classic cars. He was an active member of the Memory Lane Cruisers in Washington. Though soft-spoken, Ross was known for his dry wit, love of reading, and an unwavering kindness. He was the kind of man who showed up, helped out, and never asked for recognition.
Ross is survived by his children: Ray (Rita) Maynard and Renae Hein; grandchildren, Tim and Calli (Brandon); and great-granddaughter, Parker, who was a special joy to him in his later years.
The family will gather privately to remember and celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project in honor of Ross’s lifelong dedication to service and support for fellow veterans.
