Roy "Gene" McCollum age 78 of Woodstock, GA passed away on January 5, 2019. He was born on July 30, 1940 in Atlanta, Georgia and was the son of the late Samuel Benson and Janie Oneida Brookshire McCollum. He was proceeded in death by his late wife Judith Kay Bartlett McCollum, three brothers; Henry Thomas McCollum, Harold Lee McCollum, Thomas Watson Bill McCollum and a sister Maudie Ree Hicks McCollum. Gene graduated from O'Keefe High School of Atlanta, GA in 1959. He retired from Bellsouth as a technician in 2006 and went on to be a Forman at Condra Construction for several years. He served in the US Army as Private First Class ranking during the Cold War and was awarded the title of a Sharpshooter. He served most of his tour in Kitzingen, Germany. He received a good conduct metal and a letter of appreciation upon honorable discharge. He was a member of Sons of Confederate Veterans in the John B. Gordan Camp for 50 years and he was an advocate of civil war history. Gene is survived by his sister Era Maddox of Lithonia, Georgia, 7 nieces, 6 nephews, numerous great nieces and nephews and his two dogs Sam and Sheba. Gene had a great love for his family and cherished get togethers and reunions. Even though he never had children of his own, he was a dad to his nieces and nephews. He was loved by everyone he met and always greeted you with a big smile. He will be greatly missed by his large family and faithful friends. We will be celebrating his life on January 12, 2019 at Poole Funeral Home at 1970 Eagle Drive, Woodstock, GA 30189. We will be receiving friends from 1:00 pm- 2:00 pm and the service will be held at 2:00 pm. His remains will be escorted to Rolling Hills Cemetery right after the service where he will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife and best friend, Judy Kay.
