Susie Mccray

Susan Readling McCray, “Susie,” 76, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2023, in Grantville, Georgia. Susie was born on March 6, 1947, in Thomasville, Georgia, to the late Herbert Flake Readling and Sara Whiteman Readling.  Susie lived a life filled with love, joy, and service to others.

Susie met the love of her life Michael “Mike” McCray at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School in 1962. They were married in 1967 and had a loving marriage for 56 years. Mike and Susie were long-time residents of Jonesboro, GA where they raised their two children. Susie was a beacon of light in her community. Her unwavering dedication to helping those in need was a testament to the depth of her love for her community. She spent countless hours volunteering with Operation Christmas, Jonesboro United Methodist Church, Girl Scouts of America, Georgia PTA, Junior Service League, and Arts Clayton. She continued her service work while employed with Clayton County Community Services Authority as a homeless coordinator and Clayton County Public Schools, where she had an intricate part in starting the Childtec program in 2000. The CCPS Childtec program is a dropout prevention program, and each of her students truly became her own, where she tried to make a difference in their lives. Her warmth and generosity touched countless lives, leaving a lasting mark on her community as well as the school system. She retired from Clayton County Public Schools in 2010.

Susie is preceded in death by her parents and her sister Carol Readling Dunn. She is survived by her husband, her son, Brad McCray (Darlene), her daughter, Carol Landgrebe (Philip), her grandchildren, Michael McCray (Kaleigh), Frany Landgrebe, Caleb Landgrebe, Julia Landgrebe, her nieces and nephews Katherine “Kitty” Bray, Susan Rackley, Robert Dunn, Heidi Hilliard, Shawn McCray, Jennifer Peterson, and 16 great nieces and nephews. Susie’s greatest joy was spending time with her family, and we are forever grateful for the imprint she left on each of our lives.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, November 19, 2023 at Jonesboro First United Methodist Church, 142 S Main Street Jonesboro, GA with Rev. Winnie Thomas officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to:  curepsp.org or to Jonesboro First United Methodist Church.
