Virginia Steinhauer, 83, went to be with her Lord in Heaven on December 22, 2024 after a lengthy illness. She will be missed dearly by her family and friends.
Virginia was born in Mexico City, Mexico on February 19, 1941. She moved to Dallas, PA in the mid 1950s and graduated from Dallas Area High School in 1959 and from the University of Delaware in 1963. She married William (Bill) Steinhauer in 1962. She longed for adventure and reflected recently on how this wish had been fulfilled by growing up in Mexico City, moving to Germany as a newlywed, as well as earning her master’s degree out of state in her fifties. She and Bill lived in Munich, Germany while he was in the U.S. Army and then moved to Philadelphia, PA, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Winston Salem, NC, Columbia, SC, and Stamford, CT with Bill’s employer, Price Waterhouse & Co. In 1977, Bill changed employment, and the family moved to Savannah, GA where they lived for 30 years before retiring to Rome, GA, to be nearer to their daughters and families.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Helen and Wilford Morgan; brother, Charles Morgan; and sister, Edwina Kirkpatrick. She is survived by her husband William (Bill) Steinhauer; daughters Laura Brooks (Bobby) and Sandra Berry (Bob); grandchildren Kyle (Elizabeth) Brooks, Julia (Jackson) Kemper, Brooke Berry, Austin (Bekah) Berry; four great-grandchildren; and extended family.
Virginia loved education, both as a receiver and a giver. She earned bachelor’s degrees in French, education, anthropology and a master’s degree in anthropology. She taught several subjects in middle school for years and anthropology at Georgia Southern University. She also assisted with a Hispanic outreach program at Georgia Southern University. Virginia taught English as a Second Language while living in Savannah and in Rome.
Virginia loved dogs and found much joy in including them in her family, rescuing them, and supporting organizations that better the lives of dogs. Virginia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and committed friend. She will be remembered for her intelligence, variety of interests, kindness, spunkiness, and fun nature.
While living in Savannah, she loved fishing, crabbing, and local beach trips with her family. She embraced living on a farm outside Savannah for many years. She was very active in the Coastal Georgia Archaeology Society and participated in numerous excavations of early Spanish and native Indian sites on the coast. Virginia had a passion for travel and seized every opportunity she could. She and Bill and a special group of friends in Savannah enjoyed making many wonderful memories together on cruises throughout the years. She was a sister in P.E.O. in Savannah and in Rome (Chapter AO). She was a lifelong Methodist and a member of First United Methodist Church of Rome.
The family would like to thank the kind staff at Seven Hills Square and Agape Hospice for the loving care they gave Virginia in her last few months of life.
