Waldo Adrian “Cap” Van Valkenburgh, Jr. of Gainesville, GA, passed away on March 26, 2021. He was 89. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Louise. Born in East Orange, NJ, Cap was the son of the late W.A. Van Valkenburgh and Beatrice Carr Van Valkenburgh. Cap graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Princeton University in 1954. Afterwards, he served as a Captain in the Army Reserve. He was a chemical engineer working for DuPont in Beaumont, TX and later for IBM in Houston, the Bay Area and Atlanta. After retiring from IBM in 1987 Cap moved his family permanently to their home on Lake Lanier in Gainesville and he started a second career as a math instructor at several local colleges. Cap and his late wife, Louise, traveled the world and made many friends along the way. They especially loved Costa Rica where they made more than 25 trips. Cap was a member of Gainesville First United Methodist Church. He served as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and hospice. He was also a blood/platelet donor for many years. Survivors include five children: Mayre Favaloro (Bill), Linda Becklund (Jeff), Jim Van Valkenburgh (Nicky), Barbie Mason and David Van Valkenburgh (Susan); eight grandchildren: Albert Castle, Robbie Castle, Sean Van Valkenburgh, Perry Van Valkenburgh, Alex Mason, Jake Van Valkenburgh, Josh Van Valkenburgh and Matthew Van Valkenburgh; and three great grandchildren: Kylie Castle, Lily Castle and Ayden Castle. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
